In October 2019, the National Audubon Society studied the effects of climate change on North America’s birds. A distressing ⅔ of American birds are in danger of extinction-- but 76% can be saved if we suppress global temperatures.

Scientists predict devastating consequences if global temperatures rise 1.5 degrees Celsius: seas will rise 10 cm, 99% of coral reefs will disappear, etc. 1.5 degrees is a boundary, but it is also the rim-- of a cliff, from which there is no return if we fall. For many species, 1.5 degrees is the difference between life or extinction.

The Audubon Society’s comprehensive website (search up any bird for a profile and a map of its climate-affected range) and Birds and Climate Visualizer reveal the effect of 1.5 degrees (and 2, and 3) on North American birds.
