SPILLOVER: Animal infections and the next human pandemic

by David Quammen

Fascinating and revealing, Spillover examines the human-wildlife intersection at a specific crossover: zoonotic diseases. I never thought I would be so engrossed by a scientific book about viruses, but David Quammen's writing is full of vigor. This book was also the one that opened my eyes to the reality of science-- it is exploration, creativity, and truly adventure. Also, Quammen is brilliant.

Animal dialogues: uncommon encounters in the wild

by craig Childs

A collection of lyrical, exquisite essays by Craig Childs, narrating his piercing encounters with a variety of wild animals, including coyotes, pumas, toads, owls, porcupines, mosquitoes, eagles, herons, antelopes-- and the unknown. His essays are not so much about the animal itself as they are about the experience, the grit and the pleasure, of being in the wild with the wild.
